Some thoughts On Why News Are Better Than TV Series In Learning English

Телевизор, Человек, Наблюдение, Комната, Офис

Learn English with TV series! It is a fun and effective way! I hear this from every corner of YouTube, from every single video where an esl teacher advises you to dive into an amazing world of TV shows and movies. And their words actually do sound attractive because it's like learning and having fun at the same time. Wow, what a brilliant idea!

Below you can see a list of YouTube search results and I just typed "learn english with". The first 3 places are:

TV series
Movies
Harry Potter

There you can also find results connected to some other shows. But you see that everyone is trying to find a magic wand (sorry, Harry) and learn with minimal effort. People tend to avoid books, copybooks, notepads. Well, I am not such a strong believer in my memory power. I forget things constantly and I use a lot of stickers, virtual as well, I make notes in my copybooks and try to revise the words and phrases that I take down every day.

What I mean in this post is you should write down every new word you hear and work on the words you've already have in your vocabulary. Most of the people ignore it. They just watch and listen. A good part of them even understand about 80% maybe even up to 99% of the phrases, idioms and separate words. That is cool. I know this feeling when you finally don't need to pause the video to check a new word in the dictionary. I agree it’s nice to feel. But how can you describe this action? Are you learning at these moments? Is it education? Be fair with yourself, guys, at such moments you are having fun.

That's not bad but that's not good too. You need to catch this second when you shift from a learner to a regular TV viewer and I bet you know that watching TV shows for fun is a waste of time if you are actually supposed to study at this moment. Our friend procrastination is not sleeping and strikes at the least expected time.

I am not against movies and TV shows in general. I just think they are not as productive as news, books and newspapers. Entertaining content is tricky. That’s why my first piece of advice is:

Forget that you are watching a movie, forget about popcorn! You are an explorer in the jungles. Your goal is to collect rare creatures (words), study them, catch as many as you can. You need to learn how to get pleasure not from the movie or a TV series but from the language, the way people speak there, intonation, their surroundings, cultural aspects. To get into such a state of learning set your working place. Take several copybooks, pencils, pens, highlighters. I would advise you to tidy your desk too.

The second tip is obvious but I have to say a few words about it. Watch and listen systematically. It is difficult to follow but once you settle your schedule right it won’t be a big problem.

As I told previously I prefer news to TV series but I’ve ignored this method for a long period of time because the internet was not so good at my place and I was afraid of visiting news websites. I thought like what’s the use of reading one short article with dozens of unfamiliar words? I was concentrated on student books. And they were great but just not enough. Now I know what to do. I listen and watch to news every day. News reports come really often. YouTube channels like BBC cut their reports into short videos. World news are all the same all of the globe so you will probably hear familiar names, locations. Vivid images and real people in reports make you study way productive than any TV series or a movie.

I strongly recommend you to turn on online news now if you haven’t done this already. Boost your listening skills with this free and extremely productive way. Stay with English Ear Booster!
