3 Best Radio Formats For ESL Learners

People have been listening to the radio for a centuary already. And I don't think we'll stop in the nearest future, I mean the radio will remain as a great source of news and music for many people. So why not to use it as a language learning source?

I've already used these links in one of my articles. The links lead to a list of radio stations in a lot of languages! As I' am interested in English mostly, I'd like to recommend you these 2 links:
Actually there are so many stations and sites providing them for free. I also use this site radio.net. Excellent website with radio stations of all genres.

You also can check official websites of famous companies like BBC, CBS, CNN, name more. But I suggest using the links I put above. You'll find there everything you need.

Top genres

I won't include music stations for obvious reasons. Listening to music is not the best choice for an ESL learner, though I agree if you are really into music it works. Just don't forget to explore the lyrics and the meaning of your favorite song. Sing it to learn more words. Anyway that's a different process.

1. News/Talk
Listen to news and talk shows. Listen to them daily. Try to catch the words you already know and notice how people pronounce them, how they merge in a live speech. That's extremely important.

2. Sports
Millions of people all over the world love sports. That means they know names, countries, rules, equipment and usually these words are international. Just start listening to one of such radio stations and you will see it for sure.

3. Comedy
There are different arts. Every art is important to understand the culture and the language you are learning but the sense of humor is one of the most hard parts. Comedy shows reveal so many details and seems like to get what comedians are talking about is impossible. Yes, probably you won't get 100% but be sure that your knowledge of the US, UK will start developing faster and faster.

The top genres I point out in this post are not placed according to their importance. They are all important, combine them. Listen to different stations. Visit the websites of your favorite stations to see how often and what programs they have. Start listening now to be better in the English language tomorrow.
